Have you heard of The Star Plunge in Thermopolis? This place is a winter evening dream come true. You can sit among the stars in a hot tub or pool and just soak while you gaze up at the beautiful sky. The water is super clean, and we found it very relaxing. We loved the ambience here, as the pools were spacious and allowed us to move around freely, which is great when you have mobility issues. We particularly enjoyed the indoor pools and slides, as well as the steam room. However, we were a bit taken aback that towels were not provided, and the staff at check-in could have been more helpful.
Some of the pools at The Star Plunge could use a bit of maintenance or upgrading, but overall, it was a great break from traveling. We enjoyed just soaking and absorbing the mineral waters of Thermopolis. This was a great experience for my wife and me as we went in the morning and returned in the evening, starting in the outside pool and finishing in the inside pool. We also discovered that they offer lockers at only $1, which is quite reasonable.
While this place might not be for everyone, it’s perfect for families traveling with kids. We had four granddaughters with us, and they loved the small slide, which was perfect for the younger ones. The Star Plunge has a lovely atmosphere with beautiful flowers, and we would definitely recommend it. We forgot to bring towels, but we discovered that we could rent them, which came in handy. Although it might be a bit pricey, we felt that it was worth the experience.
4. Wind River Canyon

When visiting Thermopolis, we highly recommend taking a trip to Legend Rock Petroglyph Site. The easy stroll to see the ancient carvings was impactful and sobering, as we thought about the people who stood in the same spot thousands of years ago. It wasn’t necessarily a religious experience, but it was a reminder of the history and culture of the area. However, it’s important to note that the site is fairly remote and requires a drive on gravel roads, so wearing sturdy shoes and bringing water is crucial.
On our second visit to Legend Rock Petroglyph Site, we loved how the pamphlet allowed us to tour at our own pace. Plus, going on a Sunday when the visitor’s center was closed meant we had the site entirely to ourselves. The sheer number of carvings was surprising, and we appreciated the condition they were in. We even followed a small school group and learned additional information from the docent. However, it’s worth being aware of rattlesnakes in the area.
While the drive to Legend Rock Petroglyph Site may seem daunting, it was well worth the effort. Some of the petroglyphs date back as far as 10,000 years, and it’s a great representation of Native American rock art. The hike itself is easy, and the petroglyphs are numbered for easy viewing. Although some have unfortunately been vandalized, security cameras help protect the area. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in history and cultural preservation.
6. Hot Springs County Museum & Cultural Center
Hot Springs County Museum & Cultural Center is without a doubt a must-visit destination in Thermopolis. The museum has an impressive collection of exhibits that cover local history, region-wide events, and artifacts that tell the story of the pioneers, outlaws, ranchers, farmers, Native Americans, and more. One exhibit that caught our attention was the notorious Hole in the Wall Bar where Butch Cassidy and his gang used to hang out. Additionally, the museum has reproductions of pioneer homes, doctor’s office, and more that provide visitors with a sense of what life was like in old Wyoming.
The museum boasts two floors of jam-packed exhibits that are nicely done, well-organized, and nicely labeled. We appreciated how they curated their exhibits with a bit of history about each piece. The building is fitted with a nicely constructed ramp suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, making it accessible and family-friendly. Furthermore, we found the staff to be welcoming, friendly, and very informative. They made the experience more enjoyable by taking extra steps to ensure that we had an understanding of the exhibits.
However, as visitors, we did have a minor setback with the admission fee, which is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children, and free for veterans and military personnel. We found this to be very affordable and a fantastic value, but it would have been even better if they had an all-inclusive ticket that covered a guided tour. Nevertheless, we were able to navigate the exhibitions ourselves and inquire information about the exhibits from the staff. In summary, if you want to immerse yourself in the history and culture of Thermopolis, then this museum is worth the visit.
7. Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce
Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce is a great place to start your visit to Thermopolis. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to assist you in finding the best attractions and services in the area. They are truly the best source of information and the ideal place to stop and get an overall picture of all there is to do in the Thermopolis area.
The Visitor’s Center is packed with information on all the attractions in the area, making it the perfect place to stop if you have children who are collecting Wyoming stickers. Additionally, the gal we encountered knew her stuff, making our trip to Legend Rocks one to remember. She offered us a pamphlet that gave us a great walking tour of the petroglyphs, where to find them, and their best guess interpretative meaning. The Chamber of Commerce is also the pick up spot for the Legend Rock entrance key, making it an essential stop on your trip to Thermopolis.
Thermopolis is known for its hot springs, and the mineral hot springs provide a bathhouse that is free for visitors. Be sure to enjoy the buffalo loop and a walk along the boardwalk over the springs. Furthermore, the annual ‘Wedding of the Waters’ celebration and performance in August is a must-see experience that should not be missed! Although GPS sends you to the wrong place for the petroglyphs, the person inside the Chamber of Commerce building is incredibly helpful, ensuring that you don’t miss anything during your visit to Thermopolis. In conclusion, don’t forget to stop by the Chamber of Commerce when planning your trip to Thermopolis, as it will make your visit much more enjoyable and unforgettable.
8. Round Top Mountain

If you’re a coffee lover and a book enthusiast, Storyteller is the perfect place for you. This busy little shop had a nice selection of coffee choices, books and toys. I enjoyed sitting at a little table next to the window, watching people and working, very low stress. The decaf Americano was a bit weak for my taste, but it was still a good cup of coffee. Additionally, the shop’s location in the downtown area made it the perfect spot for exploring the interesting shops around.
According to many visitors to Thermopolis, Storyteller served the best coffee they had tasted during their trip. The coffee was of high quality and had a smooth, clean taste. We enjoyed chocolate covered coffee beans that complemented our lattes, and the kids loved the chocolate-covered gummy bears. The baristas were friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere in the shop was cozy and inviting. Storyteller was a great find and is a must-stop for coffee lovers.
Storyteller had a unique combination of great coffee, fun staff, local books, and gifts. The coffee stood out as one of the best in the area, and the bookstore had a wonderful selection of books and toys. The personnel were friendly and welcoming, and they even gave some great advice on traveling into Yellowstone. The eclectic shop had everything from Melissa and Doug activities for children to keto options like stevia sweetener and a low-carb packaged cake called Nuss. Internet was well used here, and the shop had a great selection of gifts and books for browsing and shopping. Whether you stop in for coffee or books, Storyteller is definitely worth a visit while in Thermopolis.
11. Merlin’s Hide Out
If you’re looking for something truly unique and locally made, Merlin’s Hide Out in Thermopolis is definitely worth a visit. We were impressed by the wide variety of high-quality leather products, furs and hides available. The prices were reasonable and competitive, particularly for items of this caliber. We had the pleasure of speaking with the owner, who was both friendly and informative. She even offered to make a custom order for us and ship it out if desired. Although we weren’t in the market for any leather goods, we still appreciated the opportunity to admire such beautifully crafted products.
Even if you’re not particularly interested in leathers, hides, or furs, Merlin’s can still be a fascinating place to browse. The array of products is impressive, ranging from charms at $3 to bison coats that go for $3,900. The store’s small size may make it easy to miss, but it’s well worth the search. The knowledgeable and capable staff were particularly impressive. We enjoyed chatting with Merlin’s assistant, who seemed to know everything about the products on offer. Although we didn’t leave with any of the more expensive items, we were delighted by the mementos we did pick up, like a cheap charm and a buffalo beard. For those seeking genuine and distinctive items, Merlin’s is the perfect place to visit.

We inquired about purchasing slippers, but were advised that it was too difficult to stock a range of sizes. Still, we enjoyed checking out the buffalo beards and other curious and fascinating items. The quality of the products was immediately apparent and the owners exceptionally friendly. We would highly recommend stopping by Merlin’s whether you’re shopping for a gift or just looking for an interesting place to browse.
