2. Carter Mountain Orchard

Carter Mountain Orchard offers a fantastic experience for families of all ages. We loved being able to pick fresh apples and enjoy the beautiful views of Virginia. The farmers market and concession stand add an extra touch to the visit, and the apple desserts were to die for! Eating at the picnic tables was the perfect way to wrap up the outing.

While the orchard may be busy, especially during peak season, it’s definitely worth the visit. We came for the view and left with a range of delicious goodies, including apple cider, donuts, cookies, and even apple cider slush. The Bold Rock on tap made the experience even better. The only downside was that the cider wasn’t fresh tapped, but the views were absolutely breathtaking.

For those looking for a relaxing day trip, this is the place to go. The area is stunning, and the orchard offers a range of products for both locals and visitors. The apple cider is a must-try, and the cute store is stocked with different food options and local products such as honey and jam. The only drawback may be the size of the orchard, and the busy crowds that accompany it. However, getting there early or visiting during the week can be a great way to beat the crowds.

Carter Mountain Orchard

In conclusion, while some visitors may not enjoy the crowds and long walks due to the size of the orchard, Carter Mountain Orchard offers a great day trip option for those who want a taste of nature and some delicious treats. The views are incredible, and the apple picking experience is a great way to create lasting memories with friends and family. We definitely recommend visiting!

3. White Oak Lavender Farm & The Purple WOLF Tasting Room

White Oak Lavender Farm & The Purple WOLF Tasting Room

4. Frying Pan Farm Park

Frying Pan Farm Park is a must-visit for families, especially those with young children who love animals. This park boasts of a diverse range of animals that you can see up close, including horses, pigs, sheep, cows, goats, lambs, bunnies, and even a turkey. We visited on a Monday, and it was heartwarming to watch the animals during feeding time. You can tell that they are very well cared for, and it’s great to escape the bustle of touristy spots like DC and enjoy a taste of farm life.

Besides the animals, there are plenty of other activities to keep everyone entertained. Kids can ride a pony, go on a hayride, play in the playground, or ride the carousel. Grown-ups can take a leisurely walk, have a picnic, or shop at the county store. The park also offers picnic tables that are perfect for enjoying a meal or just sitting back and enjoying the atmosphere. The only slight downside is that some of the activities require a fee.

Frying Pan Farm Park

We highly recommend Frying Pan Farm Park as a perfect family day out. There is no admission fee, making it an affordable option, and it’s a great place to enjoy nature, learn about farm life, and spend quality time together. It’s also pet-friendly, so feel free to bring your furry friend along for a stroll. We agree that this place is a neighborhood gem, and we’ve already made plans to visit again soon.

5. Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards

Looking for a place to enjoy good wine, food, and amazing views? Look no further than Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyards. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by friendly staff who directed us to the tasting hall, where we were able to enjoy a flight of red and white wines along with a specialty pizza and salad, both of which were outstanding. We were particularly impressed with the unique rosemary honey dressing on the salad and the certified Neapolitan crust on the pizza. The dessert, a delicious carrot cake, was the perfect way to finish our meal. We also enjoyed sharing pictures of our wine cask carvings with our server, Gina, who couldn’t have been more friendly and knowledgeable.

If you’re looking for a truly unique culinary experience, we highly recommend taking the cooking class with Chef Victoria. It was informative, fun, and absolutely delicious. We were blown away by the mango ceviche and loved interacting with the other participants in the class. The Inn at Stinson, where we stayed, was also amazing and made our visit even more memorable. We’ll definitely be back in the future!

One of the things we loved most about Pippin Hill were the breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Whether you’re enjoying live music outside or buying bottles and snacks at the kiosk for a picnic on the lawn, the scenery is truly stunning. We appreciated how organized everything was, and the dining room and tasting hall were both beautifully decorated. While we weren’t impressed with every white wine in the flight, the viognier and sauvignon blanc were excellent choices by the glass. Overall, we had a fantastic time and would definitely recommend Pippin Hill to anyone looking for a memorable Virginia farm and vineyard experience.

6. Bluebird Gap Farm

If you’re looking for a free summer activity to do with your family, Bluebird Gap Farm is a hidden gem worth checking out. With a variety of farm animals, a garden, and a fun trail, the farm provides a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience for all ages. One disadvantage to note is that you have to pay for animal feed if you want to interact with the animals more closely. However, with so much to see and do, it’s a great way to get back to nature without breaking the bank.

Although Bluebird Gap Farm is described as a public city park and petting zoo, don’t let the label deceive you. The farm’s animals are typical farm animals rather than zoo animals. However, as adults, we still thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the farm. The Arboretum was one of our favorite spots to see. Additionally, there is a picnic shelter that can be reserved, making it a great location for an outdoor event. Overall, Bluebird Gap Farm is a lovely place for families with young children or anyone who appreciates a peaceful and natural setting.

Bluebird Gap Farm

As an avid photographer and long-time visitor to Bluebird Gap Farm, I highly recommend this attraction for families. There is an abundance of wildlife and domestic animals, including horses, cows, goats, pigs, and various bird species. Animal feed is available for purchase if you want to interact with the animals more closely. Beyond creature-centric entertainment, the farm boasts a large playground, picnic areas, and a nature trail. Parking is free, and there are restroom facilities available. Although the farm is closed on Mondays, it is a fantastic place to visit on any other day of the week to capture timeless memories with your family.

7. Hunt Club Farm

Hunt Club Farm is a popular tourist destination in Virginia, offering a variety of fun activities for both kids and adults. One of our favorite things about this place is the petting zoo, where visitors can interact with and feed various farm animals. It’s always a treat to watch our kids petting and feeding goats, sheep, pigs and cows, and even interacting with marmosets at the aviary. We also love the treetop walk, which offers a unique perspective of the farm and the surrounding area. It’s definitely an experience we haven’t seen elsewhere. While the animals are well-taken care of, we have noticed some issues with the behavior of some visitors, especially kids. It would be great if the farm could have extra staff available to ensure the animals’ safety.

For those seeking some spooky fun, the Haunted Farm is definitely worth checking out. We enjoyed the haunted woods and the corn maze, while our older kids loved Death Alley. The staff and performers are engaging and professional, and we appreciate their strict adherence to rules and regulations. However, we advise against bringing young children to the Haunted Farm, as some areas may be too intense for them. One downside is that the crowds can get overwhelming during peak times, and certain attractions may have long lines. We suggest visiting during the early hours or weekdays to avoid the crowds.

Hunt Club Farm

Despite some issues, we highly recommend Hunt Club Farm for a family-friendly day trip, especially during the summer. We appreciate that it is a family-owned business and highly encourage support for these types of places. Admission fees can be a bit steep, but we think it’s reasonable considering the variety of activities available. We suggest bringing some snacks and drinks, as there aren’t many dining options inside the farm. Overall, we had a great time exploring the farm with our family, and we would definitely go back.

8. Cox Farms

9. Chiles Peach Orchard

One of the many farms to visit during the summer in Virginia is Chiles Peach Orchard. The orchard offers a variety of seasonal fruits and flowers, from peaches and berries to pumpkins and sunflowers. They also have a farm shop where you can purchase freshly picked fruit, homemade pies, jam, and other products. Although some visitors claim that the prices are higher than the local supermarket, we believe that the experience of picking your own fruit and enjoying tasty treats is well worth the cost. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to catch some live music during your visit!

While some visitors have had negative experiences with the staff at Chiles, we found that most were friendly and helpful. However, one particular individual was noted as being unpleasant. Visitors with young children may experience some inconvenience, such as not being able to bring a diaper bag into the orchard. Additionally, some visitors caution that walking or standing in restricted areas, such as the orchards, may result in reprimands from employees. So, it’s best to be aware of the rules and follow them accordingly.

Chiles Peach Orchard

If you’re looking for more than just fruit picking, Chiles Peach Orchard is located in the charming town of Crozet, where you can also visit coffee shops, artisan depots, vineyards, and breweries. The town has a rustic feel and is a great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Virginia’s countryside. So, if you’re passing by, make sure to stop by Chiles Peach Orchard and take advantage of the many experiences it offers.
