When we first learned about it from our waitress at Muck & Fuss, we knew we had to check it out. The jazz band playing on Thursday evenings was a pleasant surprise and the unique tapas and extensive wine selection made for an unforgettable experience. We especially enjoyed the margarita flatbread and Korean chicken as well as the marinara dip with goat cheese. The atmosphere was unbeatable, and we even stayed until closing time. We highly recommend Sidecar and plan on making it a regular stop when we’re in town.
One of the things we love about Sidecar is the outstanding service we received, especially from Brie, our waitress. Her honesty, competence, and humility were refreshing and made for an exceptional experience. It’s not often that a staff member leaves such a positive impression that we have to leave a review, but Brie went above and beyond, and we wanted to acknowledge her outstanding service. We also appreciated the option to make reservations and the fact that the place isn’t overcrowded.
We couldn’t agree more with the other rave reviews we read about Sidecar. The cocktails and appetizers were delicious, making it a perfect romantic spot for a quiet evening with your spouse. The live music was the icing on the cake, and we understand why out-of-town guests and visitors come back again and again. The only downside was that some reviewers found the cocktail recipes could use some improvement, but it didn’t detract from our overall experience. We highly recommend Sidecar to anyone visiting New Braunfels or looking for a new watering hole.

If you’re in New Braunfels and looking for a fun and lively place to have some drinks with friends, Moonshine & Ale is definitely worth checking out. The piano music is loud and energetic, and the performers do a great job of engaging the crowd and getting people up and dancing. I’m not much of a pianist myself, but I enjoyed watching the skilled musicians trade off and keep things interesting.
One major plus for Moonshine & Ale is the extensive drink menu. With over 150 beers to choose from, there’s bound to be something for everyone. I appreciated that they had a good selection of non-alcoholic drinks as well, since not everyone in our group was drinking that night. The bartenders and servers were friendly and attentive, and we never had to wait too long to order or receive our drinks.
The only downside I noticed was that the bar can get pretty crowded, especially on weekends, making it difficult to move around or find an open table. The bathrooms can also experience some crowding, although I was impressed with how well-maintained they were overall. Despite the occasional issue with crowding, I would definitely recommend Moonshine & Ale as a fun and lively spot to hang out with friends and enjoy some live music.

As frequent visitors to New Braunfels, we can confidently recommend Tavern in the Gruene as a must-visit bar. One of the things that sets this place apart is the variety of entertainment options available, including washers, darts, ping pong, and cornhole. It’s the perfect spot to gather with a group of friends and try your hand at different games while enjoying a cold drink. The only downside is that there is no draft beer available, but the prices are decent, making it an affordable night out.
The outdoor space at Tavern in the Gruene is a major highlight. With plenty of room to relax and kick back, it’s the epitome of a classic Texas bar. The indoor bar is just as charming, with lots of quaint areas and games, including shuffleboard and pool. But what really sets this place apart is the great live music and attentive service. It’s one of those bars that feels like home after just a few visits, and the friendly locals and staff make it a welcoming atmosphere.
Compared to other bars in the area, we find that Tavern in the Gruene is typically less touristy and more fun. With live music on the weekends and a great outdoor area complete with fire pits and covered pavilion, it’s the perfect place to spend a summer night. And we particularly appreciate the recently implemented no smoking rule indoors, which makes it much more comfortable for non-smokers. Overall, we highly recommend visiting Tavern in the Gruene for an unforgettable night out in New Braunfels.
6. Hoity Toit Beer Joint

The thin crust pizzas are cooked to perfection, and come with a variety of fresh and tasty toppings. While some reviewers have noted that the pizza can sometimes be hit or miss, we’ve never had a bad experience here.
One of the standout dishes at Calahan’s is definitely their dough chips – little slices of pizza dough that come sprinkled with salt, olive oil and grated Parmesan cheese. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite on your way out of town or settling in for a night of drinks with friends, these are the perfect snack to share.
While the pub doesn’t offer table service, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the food comes out quickly. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Calahan’s is definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a casual spot to grab a bite and a beer.
8. Riley’s Tavern
If you’re looking for a true piece of Texas history, you won’t want to miss Riley’s Tavern. As the first business to obtain a license to sell beer in the state after prohibition, it’s truly a unique experience. The atmosphere inside is cozy and fun, with a pool table and other games available to play. However, the real gem of this place is the outdoor seating area. Sit under the pecan and live oak trees, where smoking and pets are allowed, and enjoy a cold drink while listening to live music. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable about mixing up the perfect cocktail, like their famous Bloody Mary. Though they don’t serve food, they do have a good selection of bar snacks to keep you going.
One thing to keep in mind when visiting Riley’s is that their advertised events may not always be accurate. We had a disappointing experience when we went to see a free live music event, only to find out there was actually a cover charge. That being said, we still had a great time and will definitely be back for more live music. Speaking of which – Riley’s attracts some of the best musicians in the area, so you won’t want to miss out on catching a show. The locals are friendly and welcoming, with many regulars coming from far and wide to enjoy a cold one at this historic spot.
Overall, Riley’s Tavern is a must-visit for anyone looking for a unique and fun bar experience. While the lack of food might be a downside for some, the atmosphere, friendly locals, and great live music more than make up for it. Plus, where else can you say you’ve visited the oldest bar in Texas? We highly recommend making the trip to Riley’s and spending a few hours soaking up the history and charm of this Texas treasure.
