1. Hancock Shaker Village

If you’re looking for an experience that will get you in the holiday spirit, we highly recommend visiting Hancock Shaker Village during their Christmas light show. The displays about Shaker history are very well-done and the docents on site are readily available to give tours of the buildings and grounds. We were fascinated by the demonstrations available throughout the day and appreciated that all the buildings were open with easy-to-observe displays.

During our visit to the Hancock Shaker Village, we spent over three hours exploring and learning about the unique lifestyle of the Shaker community. The round stone barn was our favorite building on the site, and we found it very relaxing to be able to explore the village at our own pace. The cafe had delicious food, and the gift shop had a nice mix of items. We highly recommend a visit to the Hancock Shaker Village, and we think it’s worth spending more than just a few hours there.

Hancock Shaker Village

While we enjoyed our time at Hancock Shaker Village overall, there were a few things that stood out. The beautiful setting and well-maintained buildings were truly impressive, and we appreciated the knowledge and enthusiasm of the volunteer docents. However, we were sad to learn that the farm animals on site are given to members, meaning they are ultimately headed for slaughter. While the activities and demonstrations offered at the village were interesting, we think the museum should phase out its exploitation of farm animals and focus more on the fascinating aspects of Shaker history.

2. Herman Melville’s Arrowhead

If you’re a literature buff, a visit to Herman Melville’s Arrowhead is definitely worth your time. As most everyone has commented, the guided tour is excellent, with knowledgeable and enthusiast docents who bring Melville’s personal saga and literary heritage to life. From the stories of his upbringing and experiences, to his family life full of tragedy and how those moments contributed to his writings, you get a very detailed insight into this great writer. Moreover, the property is beautifully maintained and decorated with period furniture and pictures of his relatives, family, and friends, which creates a great vibe.

One of the highlights of the visit is standing in Melville’s study and being in the same room where he wrote the famous novel Moby-Dick. It’s exciting and nostalgic to look out the same window onto the same fields that inspired him. The house itself may not be that big or contain many of his original belongings, but it is a unique way to get a glimpse into the life of this challenging writer. Also, the views of the surrounding landscape and the beautiful landscaping make it a great spot for a leisurely walk.

One point to consider is that the price of the tour is $16 per person, which some may find a bit expensive, but for fans of Melville or literary history, it is well worth the cost. Additionally, the property is owned by the Berkshire Historical Society, so there are extra exhibits that reveal the history of the area, adding an extra layer of interest. However, if you are not a Melville fan, you might remove a star from your rating. Nonetheless, if you find yourself in Pittsfield, we highly recommend paying a visit to Herman Melville’s Arrowhead.

3. Barrington Stage Company

Who Could Ask for Anything More?”.

5. Colonial Theatre

If you’re looking for a historic venue that features a wide variety of live entertainment programs, then Colonial Theatre is definitely worth a visit. Built in 1903, this theater has been lovingly restored, and the intricate carvings on the balcony are a testament to its Gilded Age importance. The seating arrangement is intimate, which makes for a closer connection to the performers. However, the seats can be a bit tight, so be prepared for a cozy experience. Nonetheless, we had the pleasure of seeing Hershey Felder perform, and he did not disappoint. His 90-minute show was simply phenomenal and not to be missed.

The theater has a small parking lot adjacent to it, with street parking available nearby. However, parking can be a bit challenging at times. Still, once you’re seated in the front row, at the foot of the stage, it is easy to appreciate the architecture of this beautifully restored venue. We attended a number of shows here, from The Music Man to Little Shop of Horrors, and they were all exceptional. We especially loved that Colonial Theatre recruited talented local students for some singing parts in some of their shows, adding a real sense of community to the experience.

Colonial Theatre

Although it can be a bit challenging to find original productions here, Colonial Theatre has more than enough to offer with its range of programs. From concerts and theatrical productions to shows for kids, there is something for everyone. The theatre has been involved in many community initiatives, and the cheerful and helpful volunteer usher staff are a testament to the community spirit in Pittsfield. Overall, Colonial Theatre is a must-visit attraction in Pittsfield, not just because of the historic importance of the venue, but also for the whole experience of live entertainment.

6. Mass Audubon Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the best things to do when visiting Pittsfield is to take a stroll through Mass Audubon Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary. This hidden gem is located just minutes away from the downtown area, making it an ideal location for a peaceful and relaxing walk. The park offers well-marked trails that are easy to navigate, making it an ideal spot for families with young kids. What’s even better is that the attraction is entirely free, making it an accessible place for everyone to enjoy.

If you’re a bird-watching enthusiast, you’re in for a treat. Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary is home to several bird species, including the elusive Goldfinch. Make sure to take the crossover trail that passes through marshy terrain and an abundance of brush for the best bird-watching views. However, beware of the mosquitos that can be rampant during the summer months. Nonetheless, the well-marked and flat trails provide a gorgeous view of the wetlands, forest, and meadows, making it a perfect location for nature lovers.

Mass Audubon Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary

While the location is stunning, we encourage everyone to treat this sanctuary with care. Unfortunately, many visitors litter in the parking lot, so it’s essential to take all trash with you upon leaving. We believe it’s vital to maintain the beauty and respect the animals in their natural habitat. Overall, Mass Audubon Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary is a delightful, peaceful location, ideal for an afternoon stroll, an adventure in bird-watching, or even a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

7. Lake Onota

9. Pittsfield State Forest

«Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure in Pittsfield? Look no further than the picturesque Pittsfield State Forest! With abundant picnic tables, numerous hiking trails, streams, ponds, and stunning scenery, it’s no wonder why visitors are raving about it! We were lucky enough to visit during the peak foliage season and were blown away by the beauty of the forests. The LuLu Brook Trail was one of our favorites, but be warned, it can be quite challenging in some areas. The Hoween Trail offers similarly striking views and is well worth the trek down. Additionally, the park offers handicapped trails and outdoor shelters for those with mobility limitations.»

«The possibilities are endless at Pittsfield State Forest. Whether you are a seasoned cross-country skier or snowshoer, a mountain biker, or just looking for a gorgeous vista to enjoy, this park has it all. One of our favorite experiences was the challenging bike ride of the loop, which offers spectacular views of New York State from the overlook. And if you’re looking for a place to set up camp, the park has great options for groups large and small. Be sure to check out the group sites, complete with campfire pits and close access to swimming and hiking trails. The staff was friendly and accommodating, making our stay even more enjoyable.»

Pittsfield State Forest

«While Pittsfield State Forest offers an abundance of natural beauty and exciting recreational opportunities, it is important to note some potential downsides. Despite its serene surroundings, some areas of the park can be noisy due to partying or late-night arrivals. Additionally, signage for some trails, such as Lulu Falls, may be lacking, so it’s best to have a map handy. That being said, our overall experience was incredible, and we highly recommend this attraction to anyone visiting the area. Be sure to take the drive around the park’s road for breathtaking views that will stay with you long after your visit.»

10. Herman Melville Memorial Room

If you’re a fan of Herman Melville, then the Herman Melville Memorial Room at the Pittsfield Athenaeum is a must-visit. The room is a treasure trove of books, artifacts, furniture, photographs, and other memorabilia associated with Melville and his family. One of the most interesting items on display is Melville’s passport, which features a description of young Herman Melville and visas for his travels in Europe. Nathaniel Hawthorne even franked the back when Melville visited him in Liverpool. The collection also includes family portraits, books, and letters.

Although the Melville Room may be small, it is definitely worth a visit. As Melville scholars, we found the archives to be of particular interest. The room contains volumes of information on Melville and his family, particularly his time in the Berkshires at Arrowhead. It’s also great to see Herman Melville’s desk and breadbox in which a manuscript was discovered. The library volunteer was helpful in pointing out some of the treasures in the room, and we were thrilled to be able to interact with someone who was truly interested in what they have collected.

While the room may be underwhelming for those who are not fascinated by all things Melville, we highly recommend it for anyone looking to learn more about one of America’s great authors and a genuine part of our history. The Melville Room is an excellent follow-up to a tour of his home, which is deeply touching as it reveals his family history and development as a writer. Overall, we highly recommend adding the Herman Melville Memorial Room to your list of must-see attractions in Pittsfield.
