En nuestra visita a Paisley, no pudimos perdernos la impresionante Abadía que se encuentra en el centro de la ciudad. Desde el exterior ya se pueden apreciar los detalles románicos y góticos que la hacen única. Al entrar, nos emocionamos al escuchar el sonido del órgano, que incluso en su estado actual nos hizo imaginar cómo sonaba en su época de esplendor. Las cristaleras vibrantes y los paneles explicativos que muestran la historia de la Abadía te cautivan y te incentivan a explorar aún más. Realmente una visita imprescindible.
Una de las grandes ventajas de la Abadía de Paisley es que la entrada es gratuita. ¡No te esperas lo que hay dentro! Es enorme y en excelentes condiciones. Los alrededores son perfectos para un día de paseo, ya que es posible encontrar una gran variedad de opciones para comer cerca. Además, la historia de Escocia está presente en este lugar, especialmente en la importancia que tenía la Abadía para el bautizo de los antiguos reyes del país.
Un pequeño inconveniente puede ser el horario. En invierno cierra más temprano, por lo que es importante planificar el viaje para disfrutar por completo de la visita. One of the best attractions that Paisley has to offer is the Gleniffer Braes Country Park. We recently visited the park and were amazed by the stunning views of Glasgow from a different perspective. Walking through the green area and trees, surrounded by fresh air was a pleasant experience. We went as a couple, but we plan to take our kids to enjoy it too. It’s the perfect location to spend a few hours outdoors, connect with nature and admire the breathtaking views.
One thing to note is that if you’re planning on visiting the park, it’s best to wear good boots, as there aren’t many paths in the park. Some areas are boggy, so be sure to watch your step carefully. Additionally, there are no toilet facilities, so be prepared to bring your own supplies. Despite these shortcomings, there’s still a lot to enjoy in the Gleniffer Braes Country Park.
The diversity of plants and mature trees in the park make it perfect for foraging, picnicking, birding, and wildlife tracking. We especially enjoyed the waterfall which cascades off a steep cliff into a narrow ravine. On the exposed slopes, there are incredible views of Paisley and the whole river valley. It’s a convenient and beautiful place to escape the noise and traffic of the city. Overall, we recommend a visit to the Gleniffer Braes Country Park to anyone visiting the area.
3. Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church
Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church is one of the most stunning buildings we have ever seen! The architecture is simply breathtaking and the combination of colors is really eye-catching. We were mesmerized by the beauty of the structure even from the outside. However, we were lucky enough to be able to go inside and were not disappointed. The staff were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable about the church’s history. They truly added to the experience and made our visit unforgettable.
We were passing by and the Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church caught our eye immediately. The spectacular architecture was just too hard to resist. We weren’t able to go inside, unfortunately, but the outside was simply stunning. The combination of design and color made it an impressive sight. Although we didn’t get to go inside, the exterior alone was worth a visit. It’s a must-see when visiting Paisley.
The history behind Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church is just as impressive as the architecture. It was amazing to learn about the church’s significance to the community and its historical value. We loved hearing about how the community came together to save the church, and how it continues to be an important part of Paisley today. The Christmas bobble tunnel was a perfect touch, adding a festive and fun atmosphere to the already beautiful landscape. Being able to experience the architecture up close and from a distance was truly a memorable experience.
4. Sma’ Shot Cottages
Sma’ Shot Cottages is a brilliant place to visit for anyone interested in Paisley’s weaving history. We had a fantastic time during the Halloween Experience, where we were transported back to 1888 and were guided through the rooms and outdoors of the cottages with spooky surprises along the way. The actors were professional and talented, adding to the overall experience. It’s a great initiative that we hope Paisley continues to promote. On another visit, we found the tour to be informative, especially for those interested in the cotton/fabric industry. The restored cottages showcase the living conditions of the past, and it’s impressive that they have managed to maintain the buildings even as the city continues to grow around them.
The volunteers at Sma’ Shot Cottages are passionate about their work, making the experience even more enjoyable. During our tour, the volunteers were friendly and fun, sharing their knowledge of weaving in Paisley, and letting us see artifacts that were still in use during their childhood. We enjoyed seeing christening gowns that were similar to the one our grandfather brought over when he immigrated to Canada in 1935, adding a personal connection to the history of Paisley. The shawls on display were also beautiful.
Before our tour, we indulged in an Afternoon Tea that was simply delicious. The freshly made sandwiches and homemade cakes were a treat, and the tea was excellent value for money. The guided tour itself was hugely interesting, with well-curated room settings in two buildings. The volunteers were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, delivering facts and information on the history of Sma Shot. Entry to the museum is free, highlighting the dedication of the staff and volunteers in maintaining this community resource. If you’re in Paisley, we highly recommend visiting Sma’ Shot Cottages to learn about the past and how the people lived and worked during the textile industry’s heyday. Just be aware that parking around the area can be challenging.
5. Coats Observatory
Coats Observatory es una visita obligada si estás en Paisley. Es una maravilla de lugar con una rica historia y una joya escondida. La atracción no está muy explotada, así que normalmente tendrás la oportunidad de tener una visita guiada en privado, lo que hace que la experiencia sea aún mejor. Este parque es ideal para que los más pequeños se diviertan después de tanto paseo y visitas a sitios menos entretenidos para ellos. Paisley Town Hall is an impressive neoclassical building that stands out in the heart of the town centre. Its grand entrance facing Abbey Close features an elevated hexastyle Corinthian portico that is truly awe-inspiring. We were particularly impressed by the impressive classical architecture and it felt like we were standing in the Acropolis. The only downside was that the pediment was unadorned, which detracted from the grandeur of the portico.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly day out, then Paisley Town Hall is definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed our wee day out with the family, especially in the hot weather. The surrounding gardens make for a pleasant environment, and it’s an ideal place for a beautiful walk with your loved ones. The only regret we had was not spending more time exploring the building’s various public rooms, which offer shows, exhibitions, receptions, and more.
We had mixed feelings about the acoustics inside the town hall, though. While we had a great time seeing Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and the London African Gospel Choir, the sound quality was below par and awful in our opinion. We bought tickets for the balcony, but the sound was so bad that we struggled to hear what was being sung and spoken throughout the night. The bar area was also disappointingly soulless, with no tables or chairs, so we had to stand awkwardly when sipping our drinks. That said, the venue is excellent for music, with good acoustics and lighting. Overall, Paisley Town Hall is a magnificent building that captures the town’s important industrial past, and it’s definitely worth a visit despite the downsides.
9. Fountain Gardens
Nuestro recorrido por las atracciones turísticas de Paisley nos llevó a conocer «Fountain Gardens», un lugar que nos sorprendió gratamente. La suerte estuvo de nuestro lado, ya que cuando visitamos el lugar, las nevadas transformaron el paisaje en un ambiente idílico. Descubrimos que entre las principales características del lugar destacan los jardines, muy bien cuidados, que invitan a sentarse a leer un libro o simplemente a pasear y desconectar del trajín diario.
Una de las ventajas que encontramos en «Fountain Gardens» fue su fácil acceso, ya que se encuentra a pocos minutos andando del centro de la ciudad, lo que lo hace un lugar ideal para escapar un rato del bullicio de la ciudad. Además, la cantidad de bancos en la zona y la tranquilidad que reina en el ambiente lo hacen un espacio perfecto para relajarse y disfrutar de un momento de paz y tranquilidad.
Aunque no encontramos demasiadas desventajas en nuestra visita, cabe destacar que el lugar puede resultar poco atractivo para aquellos que buscan un turismo más activo. Si bien es posible recorrer los jardines y disfrutar de la belleza natural del lugar, no hay demasiados atractivos en cuanto a actividades se refiere. Sin embargo, si lo que buscas es desconectar y disfrutar de un espacio verde en Paz, «Fountain Gardens» es una gran opción.
